Vastu Purush and the ten directions

Every building in this tradition is laid out on the Vastu Purusha Mandala — a grid representing Vastu Purush, who lies across the plot with the devas holding him in place.

The centre of that grid is the Brahmasthan, Lord Brahma's own position, and it is meant to be kept open and uncluttered. Around it stand the Dikpalas, guardians of the directions — Indra in the east, Agni in the south-east, Yama in the south, Varuna in the west, Vayu in the north-west, Kuber in the north, Ishana in the north-east.

This is why north is the direction of wealth and lockers, and why the north-east is kept light and clean. The kavach is kept as an invocation of that whole arrangement, rather than of any single direction.

How to Place or Wear It

1. Choose an auspicious day — a griha pravesh muhurat is ideal if you are moving in. Otherwise Thursday, or Akshaya Tritiya, Navratri or Diwali.
2. Cleanse the kavach with clean water, wipe it dry, and place it before your deity during a small puja if one is being held.
