Bangkok — and Chanthaburi nearby — is the world's largest centre for cutting and treating coloured gemstones. Rough sapphire from Sri Lanka, Madagascar and East Africa is sent there, cut, and heat treated to improve colour and clarity. What comes out is genuine, natural sapphire. It is not synthetic, not glass, and not a substitute stone.

What it is not is Ceylon Pukhraj — the premium Sri Lankan material, often unheated, which costs several times more.

Heat treatment is accepted practice across the entire world gemstone trade. It is permanent, stable, and does not make a stone less genuine. The overwhelming majority of sapphires ever sold have been heated.

If you specifically want unheated Ceylon material, tell us — it is a different stone at a different price, and we would rather say so than quietly sell you Bangkok as Ceylon, which happens a great deal in this market.

Pukhraj in Vedic astrology

Pukhraj is a navratna — one of the nine primary gemstones — and belongs to Guru (Jupiter).

Jupiter governs wisdom, dharma, guidance, growth and expansion. He is the Putra Karaka, the significator of children, and in a woman's chart the karaka of the husband. Astrologers hold that Jupiter's aspect is protective — that a well-placed Guru softens a great deal of difficulty elsewhere in a chart.

Pukhraj is traditionally worn for:

Two treatments to ask about — this matters most in yellow sapphire

1. Beryllium diffusion

This is the one specific to yellow and orange sapphire, and it is the trap.

Pale or near-colourless corundum can be heated with beryllium to force a vivid yellow or golden colour into the stone. The result looks superb and costs a fraction of naturally coloured material — but it is a deep diffusion treatment, it is far less valuable, and it must be disclosed.

Ask whether the certificate addresses beryllium diffusion. A standard "heated" note is not the same thing.

2. Citrine sold as Pukhraj

Citrine is quartz — a genuine and pleasant stone, and the traditional upratna for Jupiter — but it is not sapphire and is worth a small fraction as much. It is sold as Pukhraj constantly in India, particularly in the lower price ranges.

Sapphire is hardness 9; citrine is 7. The certificate should say corundum, not quartz.

How to tell a genuine Pukhraj

What is commonly sold as Pukhraj:

• Citrine or yellow topaz — genuine stones, not sapphire
• Beryllium-diffused sapphire sold as naturally coloured
• Synthetic yellow sapphire — chemically real corundum, laboratory grown, very cheap, must be disclosed
• Yellow glass — usually with bubbles inside

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating natural corundum, with the treatment specified.
2. Natural inclusions. Real sapphire generally shows fine silk, feathers or crystals. Flawless clarity at a low price usually means synthetic.
3. Slightly uneven colour, which is normal in natural sapphire.
4. An honest price — matched to the grade being sold, not to a grade being implied.

How to Wear Pukhraj

1. Consult before you wear. A gemstone acts on a specific graha and should be prescribed for your chart.
2. Choose an auspicious day — Thursday, the day of Guru, in the morning, ideally during Shukla Paksha.
3. Metal — traditionally set in gold.
4. Finger — the index finger, which belongs to Jupiter.
5. Before first wearing, place the ring in clean water or unboiled milk for a short while, wipe it dry, and chant the Guru mantra 108 times.
6. Weight — carat weight should be chosen on an astrologer's advice rather than from a general rule.

Keeping a Thursday vrat, wearing yellow on that day, and donating chana dal, turmeric, ghee or yellow cloth are the traditional Jupiter remedies kept alongside. They cost almost nothing.

Care

Pukhraj is among the most durable stones you can own. At 9 on the Mohs scale, only diamond is harder.

• Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
• Ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe for a heated sapphire with no fractures, but avoid it if there is any doubt.
• Remove it before applying perfume or cosmetics, as a habit.
• Store separately from diamonds.
• Avoid sharp impacts to the setting.

If Pukhraj is beyond your budget

Even at Bangkok grade, a good Pukhraj of decent weight is a real purchase.

The traditional upratna for Jupiter — Yellow Topaz (Sunehla) or Citrine (Sunela) — cost a fraction as much and are perfectly legitimate when sold as what they are. The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha, the bead of Guru, is another option requiring no chart-specific fitting at all.

A good citrine sold honestly as citrine is far better than a citrine sold to you as Pukhraj.
