What is the Sarva Kashta Nivaran Yantra?

A yantra is a sacred geometric form — a precise arrangement of lines and syllables that tradition holds to be divine energy expressed as pattern rather than as image.

Sarva means all. Kashta means suffering or hardship. Nivaran means removal. Together: the removal of all afflictions.

In Indian tradition this relief is sought above all from Maa Durga, who removes fear itself and whose Saptashati contains the verse above, and from Lord Hanuman as Sankat Mochan — literally the remover of distress, as the Hanuman Chalisa says: "Sankat te Hanuman chhudavai."

Where to Place It

• Best: the north-east corner (Ishan kona) of the home, or on the east wall. Traditionally the most auspicious direction and the one kept for worship.
• Also suitable: the pooja room, or the north wall.
• Height: at eye level or slightly above. Never on the floor.
• Keep the space around it clean and uncluttered.

Avoid placing it:

How to Install It

1. Choose an auspicious day — Tuesday, the day of Maa Durga and Lord Hanuman, in the morning. Navratri is the most auspicious period of all.
2. Clean the place where it will hang, and wipe the yantra gently with a dry cloth.
3. Invoke Lord Ganesha first — chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah", as every beginning does.
4. Chant the Durga mantra "Om Dum Durgayei Namah" 108 times, or as many as you are able.
5. Offer a red flower, light a diya and incense, and place the yantra in position.
6. Light a diya before it daily, even briefly. That daily moment is the practice.

Reciting the Durga Chalisa on Tuesdays, and the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays and Saturdays, are the practices most closely associated with this yantra — and the ones most Indian households already keep. During Navratri, many families keep the yantra at the altar through the nine nights and light an akhand jyot alongside.
