Manik in Vedic astrology

Manik is a navratna — one of the nine primary gemstones — and the gemstone of the Sun.

Surya is the raja, the king. He governs authority, reputation, dignity, confidence and vitality. He is the karaka of the father, and of government and positions of command.

Manik is traditionally worn for:

• Confidence, dignity and a strong sense of self
• Authority and recognition — being taken seriously
• Vitality, energy and physical strength
• Support in government service, administration and leadership roles
• Improvement in the relationship with the father or with senior figures
• Support during a Surya Mahadasha or Antardasha

The two things to check before buying any ruby

Ruby is where the largest amount of money is lost in the Indian gemstone market, and almost all of it comes down to these two.

1. Glass-filled ruby — the trap to know about

Low-grade, heavily fractured corundum can be filled with lead glass to make it look transparent and red. The result is sold as "ruby", often very cheaply, and it looks convincing in a photograph.

It is not a durable gemstone. Lemon juice can etch it. A jeweller's torch during repair can destroy it outright. Its actual value is a tiny fraction of natural ruby, and many labs will not even call it ruby — they call it a composite or lead-glass-filled stone.

If a ruby is being offered at a price that feels too good, this is almost always what it is. Ask for it to be stated on the certificate.

2. Heat treatment — normal, and must be disclosed

The large majority of rubies worldwide are heat treated to improve colour and clarity. This is accepted practice, permanent and stable, and it is not fraud.

What matters is the disclosure. A certificate should state unheated or heated. Unheated rubies of good colour are rare and command a very large premium — so an "unheated Burmese ruby" at an ordinary price should be treated with suspicion.

How to tell a genuine Manik

What is commonly sold as ruby:

• Lead-glass-filled composite — as above, the commonest and costliest mistake
• Synthetic ruby — chemically real corundum, grown in a laboratory since 1902. Extremely cheap, extremely common, and must be disclosed
• Red glass — often with bubbles inside
• Red spinel, garnet or tourmaline — genuine gems, but not ruby

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating natural ruby, whether it is heated, and whether any filling was detected.
2. Natural inclusions. Real ruby usually shows fine needle-like "silk" or crystals. Flawless clarity at a low price generally means synthetic.
3. Under magnification, glass-filled stones show a blue or orange flash along the fractures, and gas bubbles in the filling.
4. An honest price. Fine natural ruby is among the most expensive gemstones there is — more per carat than diamond at the top end.

How to Wear Ruby

1. Consult before you wear. A gemstone acts on a specific graha and should be prescribed for your chart.

4. Finger — the ring finger.

6. Weight — carat weight should be chosen on an astrologer's advice rather than from a general rule.

Ruby is the most durable stone in this collection. At 9 on the Mohs scale, only diamond is harder.

• Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
• If your stone is heat treated only, ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe — but if there is any doubt about filling or fractures, avoid it entirely.
• Remove it before applying perfume or cosmetics, as a habit.
• Store separately from diamonds, which will scratch it.
• Tell any jeweller it is a ruby before repair work — a torch will destroy a glass-filled stone, which is one way people discover what they actually bought.

If Manik is beyond your budget

Fine ruby is genuinely expensive. The traditional upratna for the Sun — Red Garnet, Red Spinel or Sunstone — are worn as gentler, far more affordable substitutes.
