Standing on the banks of the old course of the Adi Ganga (Hooghly River) in southern Kolkata, the Kalighat Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths and the most important temple dedicated to Goddess Kali in India. It is believed that the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) derives its very name from this temple. For centuries, Kalighat has been the spiritual heart of Bengal, drawing devotees, saints, reformers and seekers from across the world.
🕉️ History & Shakti Peeth Significance
According to the Shakti Peeth legend, the toes of the right foot of Goddess Sati fell at this spot when Lord Vishnu dismembered her body to release Lord Shiva from his grief. A temple has existed here for over 500 years, though the original site is believed to be far more ancient. The present structure was built in 1809 by Sabarna Roy Choudhury family. The temple has deep connections to many eminent figures — Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was a frequent visitor and had profound spiritual experiences here. Swami Vivekananda, too, was closely associated with the temple.
🏛️ Temple & Deity
The idol of Maa Kali at Kalighat is unique — it has three large eyes, a protruding tongue made of gold, and four arms. The deity is adorned with garlands of hibiscus flowers and draped in a red and gold sari. Unlike many depictions of Kali, this idol shows only the face and hands, made of black stone, placed on a silver lotus. The atmosphere inside the temple is intense and charged with devotional energy. Daily pujas, including the early morning Mangal Aarti, draw large crowds.
