Bangkok, and Chanthaburi nearby, is the world's largest centre for cutting and treating coloured gemstones. Rough sapphire from Sri Lanka, Madagascar and East Africa is sent there, cut, and heat treated to improve colour and clarity. What comes out is genuine, natural sapphire — not synthetic, not glass, not a substitute.

What it is not is Ceylon Neelam — premium Sri Lankan material, often unheated, at several times the price. And it is certainly not Kashmir sapphire, which is essentially unobtainable and sells at auction.

Heat treatment is accepted practice worldwide, is permanent and stable, and does not make a stone less genuine. If you specifically want unheated Ceylon material, tell us — it is a different stone at a different price, and we would rather say so than quietly sell Bangkok as Ceylon, which happens constantly in this market.

Neelam in Vedic astrology

Neelam is a navratna and belongs to Shani (Saturn).

Shani is the karma-phal-data — the giver of the fruits of action. He governs discipline, patience, endurance, labour and time itself. His periods, particularly Sade Sati and Shani Dasha, are known for delay and testing rather than disaster.

Neelam is traditionally worn for:

Neelam is prescribed, never chosen. It should be worn only after an astrologer has examined your chart and specifically recommended it. Saturn's position in your chart decides whether this stone helps you or works against you, and there is no general rule that substitutes for that reading.

The trial period is real, and you should follow it. Traditionally Neelam is worn for three to seven days and the period observed closely before the stone is accepted. Some wear it first, some keep it under the pillow. If that period brings unusual losses, accidents, illness or badly disturbed sleep, the stone is traditionally returned rather than persisted with. If it brings a settling — clearer thinking, work moving, better sleep — it is accepted.

If you are in a difficult phase and hoping for a fast fix, please consider a gentler remedy first. People most often buy Neelam at their lowest moment, which is exactly when a fast-acting stone is the riskiest choice. The alternatives at the bottom of this page are there for a reason.

Treatments to ask about

Heat — standard, accepted, permanent, and must be stated.

Diffusion — pale or colourless corundum treated with titanium or beryllium so that blue colour is driven into the stone. It looks excellent and costs a fraction of naturally coloured sapphire. Ask whether the certificate specifically addresses diffusion — a plain "heated" note does not cover it.

Fracture filling — glass or resin used to fill surface-reaching cracks. Far less durable and far less valuable.

Synthetic — laboratory-grown sapphire has existed since 1902, is chemically real corundum, and is extremely cheap. It must be disclosed. In Vedic practice a natural stone is what is traditionally prescribed.

How to tell a genuine Neelam

What is commonly sold as Neelam:

• Synthetic blue sapphire — flawless, vivid and very cheap
• Blue glass — often with bubbles
• Iolite, tanzanite or blue topaz — genuine stones, but not sapphire
• Diffusion-treated corundum sold as naturally coloured

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating natural corundum, with the treatment specified.
2. Natural inclusions — fine silk, feathers or crystals. Flawless clarity at a low price generally means synthetic.
3. Slightly uneven colour, which is normal in natural sapphire.
4. An honest price matched to the grade being sold.

How to Wear Neelam

1. Have it prescribed. Not optional for this stone.
2. Observe the trial period — three to seven days, watching that period closely before accepting the stone permanently.
3. Choose an auspicious day — Saturday, the day of Shani, in the evening, ideally during Shukla Paksha.
4. Metal — traditionally set in silver or panchdhatu.
5. Finger — the middle finger.
6. Before first wearing, place the ring in clean water for a short while, wipe it dry, and chant the Shani mantra 108 times.
7. Weight — Neelam is usually prescribed in smaller weights than other navratna, precisely because of its strength. Your astrologer decides this, not a general rule.

Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays is the most widely kept Shani remedy in India — Lord Hanuman is traditionally linked with easing Saturn's harshness. Offering mustard oil at a Shani temple and donating black sesame, urad dal or a blanket on Saturdays are the others. All of these cost almost nothing, and for many people they are enough.

Care

Neelam is among the most durable stones you can own. At 9 on the Mohs scale, only diamond is harder.

• Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
• Ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe for a heated sapphire with no fractures — but avoid it if there is any doubt about filling.
• Remove it before applying perfume or cosmetics, as a habit.
• Store separately from diamonds.
• Tell any jeweller it is a sapphire before repair work.
