Shiva and the Moon

There is a reason the Moon sits on Lord Shiva's head, and it is worth knowing before you wear this kavach.

Chandra was cursed by Daksha to wane away entirely. He went to Prabhas and worshipped Lord Shiva, who could not undo the curse but softened it — so the Moon wanes, and then waxes again, forever. That place is Somnath, named after Soma, and it is counted as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

It is why Monday belongs to both Shiva and the Moon, and why Chandra remedies so often involve Shiva abhishek. The Moon does not stay full; it is restored. That is the whole idea behind this kavach.

How to Wear or Place It

1. Choose an auspicious day — Monday, the day of Chandra and of Lord Shiva, is the day to begin. Purnima and the Mondays of Sawan are considered especially auspicious.
2. Cleanse the kavach with clean water or unboiled milk in the morning, wipe it dry, and place it before your deity or altar for a short while.
3. Energize it with mantra — chant the Chandra mantra 108 times before wearing it for the first time. The kavach is already siddh through our Pandit Ji's japa, so this is an added personal step.
4. Wear it — around the neck on a white thread or chain, resting near the heart. White is the Moon's colour and is traditionally preferred.
5. Or keep it at the altar — many families keep it at the pooja sthan and perform the Monday abhishek with it in place. Both practices are followed.

Offering water or raw milk during Shiva abhishek on Mondays is the practice most closely associated with Chandra remedies — because of the Somnath connection above. Keeping a Somvar vrat, and donating rice, milk or white cloth on Mondays, are the other traditional observances.

Should I wear a pearl instead? Pearl (Moti) is the gemstone remedy for the Moon and is generally considered one of the gentler stones — but a gemstone should still only be worn on an astrologer's advice for your specific chart. A kavach is the more accessible remedy and is not chart-dependent in the same way.

I have not been sleeping well or feeling right for a long time. Will this help? Many people find comfort in the practice, and that is real. But please also take it seriously as a human matter — if disturbed sleep or low mood has gone on for weeks, speak to a doctor. A kavach can sit beside proper care; it should not take its place.
