Why People Wear a Red Wooden Mala

In Vedic tradition, sandalwood comes in two forms — red (rakta) and white (shwet) — with red sandalwood traditionally used for propitiating goddesses, while white is reserved for gods. This mala is commonly worn or used to:

  • 🔥 Build confidence, self-expression and personal drive
  • 💼 Support persistence and success in career, business or personal goals
  • 💰 Help eliminate financial obstacles and attract prosperity
  • 🛡️ Ward off negative energy
  • 🙏 Deepen devotion to Goddess Lakshmi and the divine feminine

About the Red Wooden Mala

Red sandalwood is traditionally regarded as a symbol of Brahma and blessed by Goddess Lakshmi, valued for the way it energizes higher consciousness while sharpening focus and mental clarity. Unlike its cooling white counterpart, which is closely tied to Shiva worship, red sandalwood carries a warmer, more energizing quality — making it a favoured choice for those seeking momentum, confidence and worldly success alongside their spiritual practice.

How to Use Your Red Wooden Mala

As a neck mala:

  1. Choose an auspicious day — Friday (associated with Goddess Lakshmi) is traditionally considered favourable for first wearing this mala.
  2. Cleanse the mala gently with a soft cloth before first use — avoid soaking it in water.
  3. Set your intention — hold the mala in your hands and meditate briefly on confidence, prosperity or the goals you wish to pursue.
  4. Wear it around the neck, letting it rest close to the heart.

As a japa mala for chanting:

  1. Hold the mala in your right hand, letting it rest over the middle finger, and use the thumb to move one bead at a time.
  2. Begin at the bead next to the head (Meru) bead and chant your mantra once per bead.
  3. Work your way around all 108 beads without crossing over the head bead — when you reach it, turn the mala around and continue in the opposite direction.
  4. Red sandalwood is especially favoured for chanting Devi and Lakshmi mantras, such as "Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah."

Care & Maintenance

  • Keep the mala away from water and excessive moisture to preserve the wood's natural qualities.
  • Avoid perfumes, oils and chemical sprays.
  • Store in a clean cloth pouch when not worn or in use.
  • Avoid pulling or tugging on the thread; if it wears out over time, get it re-strung rather than discarding the beads.
  • Handle japa malas with the right hand, as per traditional etiquette.
