Moonga is organic — the hardened skeleton of tiny marine polyps that live in colonies on the sea floor and build their structure slowly, branch by branch, over decades. What is cut and polished into a gemstone is that structure.

The finest material has always come from the Mediterranean, and Torre del Greco in Italy has been the world's coral-working centre for centuries — which is why the best grade is still known in the trade as Italian coral.

Moonga is a navratna — one of the nine primary gemstones — and belongs to Mangal (Mars).

An honest note about coral

Red Coral is not mined. It is taken from living marine colonies that grow very slowly, and harvesting is regulated in most of the world for that reason.

How to tell a genuine Moonga

Coral is among the most imitated gemstones in the Indian market.

What is commonly sold as Red Coral:

• Dyed bamboo or sponge coral — real coral, but a cheap porous species dyed red and often resin-filled
• Reconstituted coral — powder mixed with binder and pressed into shape
• Plastic and glass — light in the hand, and unnaturally even in colour
• Dyed howlite or dolomite — not coral at all

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating natural coral, and whether any dye or treatment was detected.
2. Fine parallel growth lines running along the surface — the record of how the colony grew. Plastic has none.
3. Slight natural unevenness in colour and surface. Perfectly uniform colour usually means dyed or reconstituted.
4. Weight in the hand. Plastic feels noticeably light and warms quickly to the touch.
5. An honest price. Fine untreated Italian coral is genuinely expensive.

How to Wear Red Coral

4. Finger — the ring finger.

6. Weight — carat weight should be chosen on an astrologer's advice rather than from a general rule.

• Remove it before applying perfume, deodorant, cream, oil or cosmetics. These are what dull coral, and quickly.
• Remove it before bathing, swimming or washing utensils. Soap and detergent damage the surface.
• Keep it away from anything acidic — lemon, vinegar, cleaning agents. Coral is calcium carbonate and acid attacks it directly.
• Avoid heat and long exposure to sunlight, which can fade the colour.
• Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth only.
• Remove it during physical work. It scratches on almost anything.
• Expect to have it re-polished every few years. That is normal for coral, not a defect.
