Firoza in Vedic astrology

How to tell a genuine Firoza

This matters more here than with almost any other stone, because turquoise is among the most faked and most treated gemstones in the world. Please read this before buying from anyone, including us.

What is commonly sold as turquoise:

• Dyed howlite or magnesite — a cheap white stone dyed blue. Very common, and not turquoise at all.
• Reconstituted turquoise — turquoise powder mixed with resin and pressed into shape.
• Stabilized turquoise — genuine stone impregnated with resin to harden it and fix the colour. Extremely common, and often not disclosed.
• Dyed turquoise — real but poor-quality stone, colour-enhanced.

What to ask for:

1. A lab certificate stating the stone is natural turquoise, and whether any treatment has been detected.
2. Origin — genuine Iranian material, not simply "Persian style" or "Firoza type".
3. An honest price. Natural, untreated Persian turquoise of good colour is not cheap. A very low price almost always means dyed or stabilized.

Natural turquoise also shows slight variation in colour and in its matrix — the fine brown or black veining. Perfectly uniform stones at low prices are usually the ones to be suspicious of.

How to Wear Firoza

1. Consult before you wear. A gemstone works on a specific graha, and should be worn on an astrologer's advice for your chart rather than on a general recommendation. This applies to any gemstone, including an upratna.
2. Choose an auspicious day — Thursday, the day of Guru, ideally during Shukla Paksha, in the morning.
3. Metal — traditionally set in silver, which is also the Persian custom. Gold is used where a chart specifically calls for it.
4. Finger — the index finger, which belongs to Jupiter.
5. Before first wearing, place the ring in clean water or unboiled milk for a short while, wipe it dry, and chant the Guru mantra 108 times.
6. Weight — carat weight should be chosen on an astrologer's advice rather than from a general rule.

Firoza needs more care than most stones, and this is the single most common reason people are disappointed with it.

Turquoise is soft and porous. It absorbs what it touches.

• Remove it before applying perfume, deodorant, cream, oil or cosmetics. These are what ruin turquoise, more than anything else.
• Remove it before bathing, swimming or washing utensils. Soap and detergent are damaging.
• Avoid heat and direct sunlight for long periods — both can alter the colour.
• Never clean it with ultrasonic cleaners or chemical jewellery solutions. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth only.
• Store it separately from harder stones, which will scratch it.
• Expect some change over the years. Natural turquoise gradually deepens or shifts in tone as it absorbs body oils. This is normal in a natural stone — a stone that never changes at all is usually a stabilized one.

Worn carefully, a good Firoza lasts generations. Worn carelessly, it can dull within months.

Will the colour change over time? Yes, gradually, as it absorbs body oils — and that is normal in natural turquoise. A stone that never changes at all is usually stabilized. Careful use slows it considerably.
