How to tell a genuine Iolite

Iolite has two advantages: it is rarely treated, and it is hard enough to wear daily. Most of what goes wrong here is imitation, not enhancement.

What is commonly sold as Iolite:

• Blue glass — the commonest imitation, and convincing in a photograph
• Synthetic blue quartz or dyed quartz
• Poor-quality stone cut in the wrong direction, showing grey instead of blue

What to look for:

1. The colour must shift as you turn the stone. This is pleochroism, and it is iolite's signature. Glass shows the same colour from every angle.
2. A lab certificate stating it is natural iolite (cordierite).
3. A good cut. Because of that same pleochroism, a stone cut in the wrong orientation looks dull and grey. A well-cut iolite shows violet-blue face-up.
4. An honest price. Iolite is affordable — but a price far below the market usually means glass.

How to Wear Iolite

Is Iolite treated? Rarely. Unlike turquoise or lapis, iolite is normally sold as it comes out of the ground — which is one of the better things about this stone.

Is it durable enough for daily wear? Yes. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it is considerably harder than lapis, turquoise or moonstone. It does have a cleavage direction, so it should be removed during heavy physical work, but for normal daily wear it holds up well.
