First: only chrysoberyl is Lehsunia. A great many stones show a cat's eye effect — quartz, tourmaline, apatite, tiger's eye — and a very large amount of what is sold in India as "cat's eye" is not stone at all, but fibre-optic glass. It is cheap, the eye is unnaturally perfect, and it is astrologically meaningless. If a cat's eye is being offered at a low price, it is almost certainly one of these.

Second: this is not a casual stone. Cat's Eye sits alongside Blue Sapphire and Hessonite as the gemstones astrologers are most cautious about — held to act quickly and to be unforgiving where it does not suit the chart. It is traditionally worn on trial for a few days before being accepted, and it should never be worn on a general recommendation or because it looks beautiful.

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating chrysoberyl. Not "cat's eye", not "cat's eye quartz" — the word chrysoberyl must appear.
2. The eye must move. Tilt the stone under a single light source and the band should glide across the dome.
3. The milk and honey effect in good stones — milky on one side of the eye, honey on the other.
4. A sharp, centred, straight eye. In fine material it is a fine line, not a broad blur.
5. An honest price. Natural chrysoberyl cat's eye is a genuine navratna and is priced accordingly.
