Why People Keep a Dhant Potli at Home

In Indian tradition, this combination of samagri is believed to bring good fortune and abundance to a home or business. It is commonly used to:

  • 🪔 Perform Lakshmi Pujan on Diwali and Dhanteras
  • 🏠 Mark the muhurat of Griha Pravesh (new home)
  • 🏪 Bless a new shop, office or business opening
  • 💰 Keep in the tijori, galla or cash box as a symbol of prosperity
  • 🎁 Gift to family and friends as a shagun on festivals and weddings

About the Potli

The potli is made of ruby red silk with gold zari hand embroidery, paisley (keri) motifs, floral vines, pearl detailing and a gold border. It closes with a gold drawstring cord finished with tassels and small bells. As this is a handcrafted product, minor variations in embroidery and samagri may occur. This is a mark of handwork, not a flaw.

How to Use Your Dhant Potli (As Per Tradition)

  1. Choose an auspicious day – Dhanteras (6 November 2026), Diwali (8 November 2026) or any Friday, the day traditionally associated with Maa Lakshmi.
  2. Place it in your puja – keep the potli on a clean red or yellow cloth near the Lakshmi–Ganesh idols or photo.
  3. Offer a prayer – light a diya, offer flowers and chant the mantra below.
  4. After puja – keep it in your tijori, galla, almirah or puja sthan.
  5. Keep it clean – store the potli in a clean, dry place and handle it after washing your hands.

Chanting & Practice

Many families chant a short Lakshmi mantra while placing the potli in the puja:

Lakshmi Mantra: "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah"
Ganesh Mantra: "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah"

Lighting a diya and offering a small prayer on the day you place the potli is a common practice.

Care & Maintenance

  • Keep the potli away from water, oil and moisture, as it contains natural samagri.
  • Store it in a clean, dry place; do not keep it in damp areas.
  • Do not wash the potli. If needed, wipe the silk gently with a soft dry cloth.
  • Many households replace the samagri every year at Diwali or Dhanteras.
