In Vedic astrology this is Moti, the navratna gemstone of Chandra, the Moon — and of all nine, it is the gentlest.

Moti in Vedic astrology

The Moon governs manas: the mind itself. Thought, emotion, memory, sleep, and the bond with the mother. Every other graha acts on a part of life; the Moon acts on the place where you experience all of it.

Moti is traditionally worn for:

Moti is considered the safest of the navratna. Where Blue Sapphire and Cat's Eye are worn with caution and often on trial, Pearl is held to be gentle and is the stone astrologers most commonly recommend without hesitation. It should still suit your chart — but it carries none of the same risk.

The thing every pearl buyer should know

Almost every pearl sold today is cultured.

A natural pearl forms with no human involvement at all, and those are now so rare that fine natural pearls sell at auction rather than in shops. In a cultured pearl, a nucleus is inserted into the mollusc, which then coats it with nacre exactly as it would naturally — the nacre is real, the process is real, and the pearl is a genuine pearl. It is simply not a natural one.

This is standard across the entire world trade and is not deceptive. What is deceptive is not saying so — and in India, a great many ordinary cultured pearls are sold as "Basra pearls" at natural-pearl prices.

Genuine Basra pearls — natural pearls from the Persian Gulf — are historic, extremely scarce, and priced in lakhs. If one is being offered to you at a few thousand rupees, it is not a Basra pearl.

For astrological purposes, views differ on whether a cultured pearl serves as well as a natural one. Many astrologers accept cultured pearls readily; some prefer natural. It is worth asking whoever is advising you.

How to tell a genuine Pearl

What is commonly sold as pearl:

• Glass or plastic beads coated with a pearlescent finish
• Shell pearls — made from ground shell, pressed and coated. Convincing, and not a pearl
• Cultured pearls sold as Basra or natural, which is the most common misrepresentation in India

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating whether the pearl is natural or cultured, and its type.
2. The tooth test. Rub the pearl gently against the edge of your front tooth. A real pearl feels slightly gritty; an imitation feels perfectly smooth. It is an old test and it still works.
3. Slight irregularity. Real pearls are almost never perfectly identical in shape, and the surface shows faint natural markings. Flawless uniformity across a whole strand at a low price means imitation.
4. Depth of lustre. A real pearl's shine comes from within the nacre layers. An imitation's shine sits on the surface.

How to Wear Moti

1. Consult before you wear. Even a gentle gemstone acts on a specific graha and should be fitted to your chart.
2. Choose an auspicious day — Monday, the day of Chandra, in the morning, ideally during Shukla Paksha. Purnima is considered especially auspicious.
3. Metal — traditionally set in silver, the Moon's metal.
4. Finger — the little finger.
5. Before first wearing, place the ring in clean water or unboiled milk for a short while, wipe it dry, and chant the Chandra mantra 108 times.
6. Weight — carat weight should be chosen on an astrologer's advice rather than from a general rule.

Chandra Beej Mantra: "Om Shram Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah" Chandra Mantra (simple): "Om Som Somaya Namah"

Offering water or raw milk during Shiva abhishek on Mondays is the practice most closely associated with Chandra remedies — Lord Shiva wears the crescent on his head. Keeping a Somvar vrat, and donating rice, milk or white cloth, are the other traditional observances.

Care — pearls need more of it than any other gem

Pearl is the softest gem we sell, at 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, and its surface is nacre — organic, and easily damaged by anything acidic.

The jeweller's rule is: last on, first off. Put your pearl on after perfume, cosmetics and hairspray, and take it off before anything else.

• Perfume, deodorant, hairspray, cosmetics and sweat all damage nacre. This is the main cause of dull pearls.
• Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after every wearing. Thirty seconds, and it doubles the life of the pearl.
• Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, or any chemical jewellery solution.
• Remove it before bathing, swimming or washing utensils.
• Do not store it in an airtight box. Pearls contain moisture and can dry out and craze. A soft cloth pouch is ideal.
• Store it separately. Almost every other stone will scratch it.
• If strung, have it restrung every couple of years if worn often.

Looked after, a pearl lasts generations. Neglected, it dulls within a year.

Moonstone (Chandrakant Mani) is the traditional upratna for the Moon — far more affordable, harder and easier to care for, and considered gentler still.
