Opal does not have a colour. It has all of them, and none of them are pigment.

Inside every precious opal are microscopic spheres of silica, stacked in orderly layers. When light passes through, those layers diffract it — splitting white light into flashes of red, green, blue and violet that shift as the stone moves. It is the same physics that makes a soap bubble shimmer, held inside a stone.

That effect is called play-of-colour, and it is the only thing that separates precious opal from ordinary silica.

Opal is also, unusually, part water — between three and twenty per cent of it. Which explains almost everything about how it must be cared for.

White Opal in Vedic astrology

In Vedic gemology, Opal is worn as an upratna — a substitute gemstone — for Heera (Diamond), and is therefore associated with Shukra (Venus).

Venus governs love, marriage, beauty, art, comfort and the finer things. He is the planet of relationships and of everything that makes life pleasant rather than merely functional.

White Opal is traditionally worn for:

  • Harmony and warmth in marriage and relationships
  • Charm, grace and personal magnetism
  • Support in creative and artistic work
  • Comfort, ease and the enjoyment of what one has
  • Support during a Shukra Mahadasha or Antardasha
  • Relief where Venus is weak or afflicted in the chart

Because a good diamond is out of reach for most people, opal is the most common Venus remedy actually worn — gentler in effect, and a fraction of the cost.

"Isn't opal unlucky?"

You may have heard this, and it is worth answering directly.

The superstition is Western and fairly recent — it traces largely to a nineteenth-century novel in which an opal brought misfortune, and to jewellers who found the stone difficult to set and easy to damage. It has no basis in Vedic astrology at all.

In Vedic terms, opal is simply Venus's stone. Like any gemstone it should suit your chart — and if it does not, that is a question of placement, not of the stone being cursed.

The three kinds you will be shown

Australian White Opal — from Coober Pedy and surrounding fields. A milky white body with play-of-colour. The classic, stable, and what most people mean by white opal.

Ethiopian (Welo) Opal — newer to the market, often with vivid play-of-colour at a lower price. It is hydrophane, meaning it absorbs water: submerge it and it turns transparent and loses its fire temporarily. It usually recovers as it dries, but it can also craze. Ethiopian opal must never be soaked.

Doublets and triplets — a thin slice of real opal glued to a dark backing, sometimes with a clear cap on top. These are not solid opal and should be priced and described as what they are. Viewed from the side, the glue line is usually visible.

We state which you are buying.

How to tell a genuine White Opal

What is commonly sold as opal:

  • Opalite — a man-made glass with a milky glow and no true play-of-colour
  • Synthetic opal — laboratory-grown, real in composition but must be disclosed. Often shows an unnaturally regular, snake-skin like pattern
  • Doublets and triplets sold at solid-opal prices
  • Resin-impregnated or dyed material

What to look for:

  1. A lab certificate stating natural opal, solid or assembled, and treatment if any.
  2. True play-of-colour. The flashes must change as the stone moves. Opalite glows the same from every angle.
  3. Irregular colour patches. Natural opal's play is random. Synthetic often shows a too-regular, columnar or lizard-skin pattern.
  4. View it from the side. A doublet or triplet shows a flat glue line where the layers meet.

Who It Is For

  • Anyone advised a Venus remedy who cannot or would rather not buy a diamond

  • Those with a weak or afflicted Venus in their chart
  • Couples seeking warmth and harmony in a marriage
  • Artists, designers, performers and those in creative work

How to Wear White Opal

  1. Consult before you wear. A gemstone acts on a specific graha and should be fitted to your chart.
  2. Choose an auspicious day — Friday, the day of Shukra, in the morning, ideally during Shukla Paksha.
  3. Metal — traditionally set in silver, white gold or platinum.
  4. Finger — the ring finger, as with Diamond.
  5. Before first wearing, place the ring in clean water briefly — not a long soak, and not at all if the stone is Ethiopian. Wipe dry and chant the Shukra mantra 108 times.
  6. Weight — carat weight should be chosen on an astrologer's advice rather than from a general rule.

Chanting & Practice

Shukra Beej Mantra: "Om Dram Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah" Shukra Mantra (simple): "Om Shum Shukraya Namah"

Friday is the day for Venus remedies — donating white cloth, rice, sugar or curd, and offering white flowers, are the traditional practices kept alongside. They cost almost nothing.

Care — opal needs the most specific care of any stone

Opal contains water. Everything below follows from that.

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes. Hot water straight after cold, or leaving it in a car in summer, can cause crazing — a network of fine internal cracks that cannot be repaired.
  • Do not let it dry out completely. Long storage in a very dry place, or under a hot lamp, is genuinely risky. Store it in a soft cloth pouch, not a sealed desiccated box.
  • Never soak Ethiopian opal. Hydrophane material absorbs water, turns transparent and loses its fire until it dries — and may craze in the process.
  • Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
  • Remove it before applying perfume, cosmetics or household chemicals, and before bathing or swimming.
  • Remove it during physical work. At 5.5 to 6.5 it scratches and chips easily.
  • Store it separately from harder stones.

Opal is the most fragile stone we sell, and also one of the most rewarding to own. Treat it gently and it will outlast you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is White Opal? It is a hydrated silica gemstone showing play-of-colour — flashes of spectral colour caused by light diffracting through microscopic silica spheres. In Vedic gemology it is the upratna of Diamond, and belongs to Shukra (Venus).

Is opal unlucky? No. That superstition is Western and fairly recent — traceable largely to a nineteenth-century novel and to jewellers who found opal fragile to work with. Vedic astrology treats it simply as Venus's stone, which like any gemstone should suit your chart.

Why is opal cheaper than diamond? Because it is an upratna, a substitute stone. It is traditionally considered gentler in effect and costs a fraction as much, which is why it is the Venus remedy most people actually wear.

What is the difference between Australian and Ethiopian opal? Australian white opal is the classic and is stable. Ethiopian Welo opal often has more vivid colour at a lower price, but it is hydrophane — it absorbs water, turning transparent and losing its fire until it dries, and it can craze. Both are genuine opal; they simply need different handling.

What is crazing? A network of fine internal cracks that can develop if opal dries out or suffers a sudden temperature change. It cannot be repaired, which is why the care instructions above matter more for this stone than any other.

What is a doublet or triplet? A thin slice of real opal glued onto a dark backing, sometimes with a clear cap. They look striking and cost far less than solid opal — but they are assembled stones and must be sold as such. Look at the stone from the side; the glue line is usually visible.

How do I know it is not opalite? Opalite is man-made glass with a milky glow and no true play-of-colour. Move the stone under light — genuine opal's flashes change; opalite's glow does not.

Can I wash it? Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it. Do not soak it, especially if it is Ethiopian, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner.

Which finger and metal should it be worn in? Traditionally the ring finger, set in silver, white gold or platinum.

On which day should I start wearing it? Friday, the day of Shukra, in the morning.

Is it durable enough for daily wear? With care, yes — but it is genuinely soft and should be removed for physical work, sport and housework. If you want a Venus remedy you can wear without thinking about it, ask your astrologer about alternatives.

Can men wear White Opal? Yes. There are no restrictions of gender or age.

Can I wear it alongside a Rudraksha? Yes, that is common. Rudraksha and gemstones come from different traditions and are frequently worn together.
