Moonstone in Vedic astrology

In Vedic gemology, Moonstone is worn as an upratna — a substitute gemstone — for Moti (Pearl), and is therefore associated with Chandra (the Moon).

White Moonstone — a milky white body with a soft white or silvery sheen. The classic, widely available and affordable. This is what most people picture.

Rainbow Moonstone — a white body flashing blue, violet and gold. Beautiful, popular, and worth knowing that mineralogically it is not moonstone at all but a white labradorite. It is sold as moonstone everywhere in the trade, which is accepted usage — but you should know what you are buying, and it should never be priced as blue moonstone.

How to tell a genuine Moonstone

Moonstone has one advantage over turquoise and lapis: it is rarely treated. Enhancement generally does not work on it, so most natural moonstone is exactly that.

The problem is imitation rather than treatment.

What is commonly sold as moonstone:

• Opalite — a man-made glass, also called "sea opal". Very common, very convincing in a photograph.
• Plastic and resin — cheap, and easily spotted in the hand.
• White labradorite sold at blue moonstone prices.

What to look for:

1. A lab certificate stating it is natural moonstone.
2. The sheen must move. Tilt the stone — adularescence shifts across the surface as the angle changes. A glass imitation has a static, painted-on glow.
3. Look for tiny internal features. Natural moonstone often shows fine internal cracks called centipede inclusions. Glass may show round bubbles — a sure sign it is not stone.
4. An honest price. Fine Sri Lankan blue moonstone is expensive; white moonstone is not.

How to Wear Moonstone

Offering water or raw milk during Shiva abhishek on Mondays is the practice most closely associated with Chandra remedies — Lord Shiva wears the crescent, and the connection runs back to the Somnath tradition. Keeping a Somvar vrat, and donating rice, milk or white cloth on Mondays, are the other traditional observances.

Moonstone's weakness is not softness but cleavage. It has perfect cleavage in two directions, which means a sharp knock can split it cleanly even though the stone is reasonably hard.

• Do not wear it during physical work, sport, or anything where the ring may strike a hard surface.
• Remove it before applying perfume, cream or cosmetics.
• Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. The vibration can split the stone along its cleavage.
• Clean with a soft, dry cloth, or lukewarm water and a soft brush if needed.
• Store it separately from harder stones.
• Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as hot water straight after cold.
