Why do gemstone prices vary so much?
You will see the same gemstone sold online for ₹500 and for ₹5,00,000. The difference comes down to a few factors:
- Origin: Stones from famous sources, such as Ceylon (Sri Lankan) sapphires, Burmese rubies or Colombian emeralds, cost many times more than stones of the same weight from other origins.
- Colour: Even, rich colour is the biggest driver of value. Very pale or very dark stones cost less.
- Clarity: Fewer visible inclusions (natural marks inside the stone) means a higher price.
- Treatment: Heat treatment is common and accepted for many sapphires and rubies. Untreated stones cost more. Glass-filled or diffused stones should cost far less and must be disclosed.
- Cut and size: Larger stones are rarer, so price per carat often rises with weight in premium grades.
- Certification: A lab certificate confirms the stone is natural and states its weight. It adds trust and resale value.
RudraGram focuses on natural, certified gemstones at affordable prices for astrological use. If you are looking for a premium-origin or untreated stone, contact our team and we will tell you what is available.
How to read a gemstone price
- Check carat vs Ratti: Astrologers usually recommend weight in Ratti, but certificates and our listings use carats. 5 Ratti is about 4.56 carat.
- Compare price per carat, not just the total: A cheap headline price on a tiny stone may cost more per carat than a larger stone.
- Be wary of "too cheap": A "Neelam" at ₹200 per Ratti is very likely glass, synthetic or a different mineral.
- Ask what the certificate covers: It should name the mineral, the weight and whether the stone is natural.
