Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur – A Divine Spiritual Place in India

Towering over the ancient city of Thanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu, the Brihadeeswarar Temple — popularly known as the Big Temple — is one of the greatest architectural achievements in Indian history. Built by the legendary Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola I between 1003 and 1010 CE, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is dedicated to Lord Shiva and stands as a symbol of the extraordinary power, vision and artistry of the Chola dynasty. It is part of the Great Living Chola Temples, a group recognised for their outstanding universal value.

🕉️ History

Raja Raja Chola I commissioned this temple at the peak of Chola power, when their empire stretched across South India, Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia. The temple was completed in just seven years — a remarkable feat given its massive scale. It was not merely a place of worship but also served as the administrative, cultural and economic heart of the Chola capital. Inscriptions on the temple walls record donations, land grants, dance performances and details of the temple's administration, making it an invaluable historical document.

🏛️ Architecture

The Brihadeeswarar Temple is an engineering marvel that continues to astonish architects:

  • Vimana (Tower): At 66 metres (216 feet), it is one of the tallest temple towers in the world. The Kumbam (capstone) at the top is popularly said to weigh about 80 tonnes, and how the Cholas raised such heavy stone to this height is still debated.
  • Nandi: A massive monolithic Nandi bull, carved from a single rock, sits in the Nandi Mandapam facing the sanctum. It is about 6 metres long, 2.6 metres high and weighs around 25 tonnes.
  • Shiva Lingam: The main Lingam inside the sanctum is one of the tallest in India, standing at about 3.7 metres.
  • Frescoes: The corridors contain beautiful Chola-era paintings depicting scenes from Shiva's life, hidden for centuries under later Nayak-period paintings and rediscovered in the 20th century.
