Bhai Dooj 2026: Date, Tilak Muhurat, Story and Meaningful Gift Ideas

Quick answer: Bhai Dooj 2026 is on Wednesday, 11 November 2026. Dwitiya tithi runs from about 2:00 PM on 10 November to 3:53 PM on 11 November (IST), and the traditional afternoon (aparahna) window for tilak is roughly 1:30 PM to 3:45 PM on 11 November. Exact times vary slightly by city. Thoughtful gifts this year include protective and prosperity bracelets, a Rudraksha, or a rashi bracelet chosen for your brother's or sister's sign.

Bhai Dooj closes the five days of Diwali. It celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters: the sister applies tilak and prays for her brother's long life and wellbeing, and the brother gives her a gift and his promise of protection.

The story behind Bhai Dooj

According to tradition, Yamraj, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya after a long time. Yamuna welcomed him with tilak, aarti and a meal. Moved by her love, Yamraj blessed her and declared that any brother who receives tilak from his sister on this day will be protected from untimely death. That is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya, and in different regions Bhau Beej, Bhai Phonta or Bhai Tika.

How to perform the Bhai Dooj tilak

  1. Prepare the thali with roli or kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice), a diya, sweets, a coconut or dry fruits, and a small flower.
  2. Seat your brother facing north or east, ideally on a small asan, with a handkerchief or cloth on his head.
  3. Apply tilak on his forehead with roli and akshat during the afternoon muhurat.
  4. Perform aarti with the diya and pray for his long life, health and success.
  5. Offer sweets and, as many families do, serve him a meal.
  6. The brother gives a gift and blesses his sister, or seeks her blessing if she is older.
