Hidden in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is one of India’s most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Built by the Chandela dynasty between 950 and 1050 CE, these temples are celebrated worldwide for their stunning architecture and exquisitely detailed sculptures that depict every aspect of human life — from devotion and daily routines to love and intimacy. Of the original 85 temples, only 25 survive today, each a masterpiece of Nagara-style temple architecture.
🕉️ History
The Chandela Rajputs, who ruled the Bundelkhand region, built these temples over a span of about 100 years. According to legend, the dynasty's founder Chandravarman was born of the union between the moon god Chandra and a beautiful maiden Hemvati. The temples were built to celebrate the union of the divine and the human. After the decline of the Chandela dynasty, the temples fell into obscurity and were swallowed by dense forests, only to be “rediscovered” by British engineer T.S. Burt in 1838.
🏛️ The Three Groups
The surviving temples are divided into three groups:
- Western Group (most visited): Includes the magnificent Kandariya Mahadeva Temple (the largest and most ornate, dedicated to Shiva), Lakshmana Temple (dedicated to Vishnu) and Devi Jagadamba Temple.
- Eastern Group: Includes Jain temples like Parsvanath Temple, Adinath Temple and the Hindu Brahma Temple and Vamana Temple.
- Southern Group: Features the Duladeo Temple and Chaturbhuj Temple, slightly off the beaten path but equally beautiful.
🎨 The Sculptures
The temples of Khajuraho are covered with some of the finest sculpture art ever created. While the erotic sculptures (which constitute only about 10% of the total) draw the most attention, the vast majority depict gods, goddesses, celestial nymphs (apsaras), musicians, dancers, warriors, animals and scenes of daily life. The sculptures are remarkable for their lifelike quality, expressive faces and dynamic poses. They represent a celebration of life in all its forms and are deeply rooted in the Tantric tradition that views the human body and desire as pathways to the divine.
🌙 Light & Sound Show
Every evening, a spectacular Light & Sound Show is held at the Western Group of temples. Narrated by Amitabh Bachchan, the show brings the history and legends of Khajuraho to life against the illuminated backdrop of the ancient temples. Shows are held in both English and Hindi.
